Health, Safety and Environment Policy

Purpose. Commits Hydra to the health and safety of every person at its sites and to the protection of the environment, and sets out how personal safety, occupational health and environmental performance are managed.

1.Policy statement

Hydra will provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health so far as is reasonably practicable and will comply with the Work Health and Safety Act, the Dangerous Goods Safety Act, the Environmental Protection Act and the conditions of its licences. Every person at a Hydra site has the authority to stop work that is unsafe.

2.Health hazards

Workers are exposed to corrosive, toxic and flammable chemicals, noise, heat and shift work. Exposure must be controlled by containment, ventilation, procedures and the personal protective equipment specified for each task. Health monitoring will be provided for workers exposed to chemicals listed in the health monitoring schedule and results will be handled confidentially.

3.Personal protective equipment

The minimum personal protective equipment in process areas is chemical resistant coveralls, safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses and gloves. Tasks involving open systems, sampling, connection and disconnection of hoses and breaking of joints require the chemical splash suit, face shield and respiratory protection stated in the task procedure. Emergency showers and eyewash stations must be tested weekly.

4.Environmental protection

Process wastewater must be treated and discharged only through the licensed discharge point within the licence limits. Air emissions from scrubbers and the solvent recovery unit must be monitored to the licence program. Spills must be contained within bunds and reported. Waste must be classified, stored and consigned to licensed receivers with tracking documentation.

5.Responsibilities

Managers must provide resources, training and supervision and review performance monthly. Supervisors must run pre-start meetings, verify permits and isolations and act on hazards on the day. Workers must follow procedures, wear the protective equipment required, report hazards and incidents immediately and take reasonable care for themselves and others.

6.Consultation and review

Hydra will consult workers through the health and safety committee, shift pre-start meetings and elected health and safety representatives. This policy will be reviewed annually and after any serious incident or change in legislation.
